Sea Chair from Studio Swine on Vimeo.
Sea Chair Video

Hi BCA1,

In this post I'll analyse the linked 'Sea Chair' Video. This will give you an idea of the kind of analysis that I'm looking for in your blogs.

Source: I found this video through Vimeo Staff Picks.

Byline: A fishing boat heads to sea, collects plastic waste from the ocean, which it melts down and turns into a stool.

Theme: the video has a strong environmental message. It encourages us to think about the waste in our oceans. It suggest a creative way of dealing with that waste, while showing the extent of the problem.

Structure: The video is structured around a day's fishing trip. It is not character based; we never really get to know any of the fishermen or the artist who makes the chair. Most shots of them are of their hands working or of their faces partially or wholly obscured. By concentrating on the processes of fishing and chair constructing rather than the fishermen as characters the video-maker makes the plastic waste the focus of the film.

Other observations:
- The first 30 seconds 00:00-00:30 of the video is setting the scene with cutaway shots: we are on a fishing boat at dawn, we hear the sound of the sea, fishermen untangle fish from their nets.

- From 00:30-01:00 There is a series of cutaway shots, some of them are from later in the day when the boat is on the shore. The title and the music also appear. I think the video-maker has chosen to include these shots to give the viewer a sense of space, before he/she introduces the plastic into the film.

- 01:00- 01:30 We begin to see the plastic that the fishermen are hauling out of the sea. As the music's tempo increases, the shots of plastic become shorter. And we see more and more of it.

- 01:30 - 01:40 We see the process of melting down the plastic. There is a lot of colour in these shots. Most of them are close up.

- 01:40-01:50 There are more cutaway shots of the fishermen. This lets the video breathe before we are shown the next part of the chair-making process, reminding us that fishermen are working around us.

- 01:50-02:30 The process of pouring the plastic moulds, cooling down the legs, and assembling the chair is cut in with a few shots of fishermen. The music begins to increase in tempo. The shots get faster.

-02:30- end. The boat is hauled up on land. We see shots of the finished chair. This gives the video a sense of completion.
